3 Grocery Store Swaps to Help the Planet

In a wold where almost everything is disposable, it's easy to overlook the small conveniences that have a hefty price tag on our environment - if we don't see the impact first hand, does it really matter?  We think it does, and this year we're consciously focusing on our actions and how they impact the planet.  We're not trying to be extreme, so these are little things that anyone can do... and if you enjoy living on planet Earth, you might want to join us!

Here's How We're Being More Eco-Friendly

These are three things that we've changed about how we grocery shop, and they're not hard.  They're practical, useful, and it just feels good to know that we're making small steps towards a healthier environment for our future!

1.  Grocery Bag Swap

Instead of filling up our car with plastic grocery bags that can take 100 years to break down, switch to paper bags.  Even better, keep a couple of these oversized Ultimate Totes in your car - they're super sturdy and can handle a LOT of groceries!  They even have pockets on the inside for bottles of wine, milk or other things you might not want "tossed around" in your bag.  They're collapsible too, so they won't take up a ton of room when not in use.

2. Reusable Produce Bags

If you think about it, disposable produce bags are convenient - because really, how else can you juggle 5 oranges into your cart and get them home?  But you really only use them for how long - 15 minutes?  30?

Instead of wasting several plastic bags for every type of produce, every trip to the grocery store, try reusable mesh bags.  Ecobags are made from 100% certified organic cotton, with a drawstring, so they're perfect for acquiring and storing all kinds of produce in your fridge.  They're also machine washable, so you can use them over and over again.

3.  Reusable Silicone Bags

According to a study in 2017, the average US family uses over 500 zippered plastic bags every year.  That's a LOT of single-use plastic bags that end up in landfills and water sources. We want to change that, and Stasher Bags have made the transition an easy one.  These platinum silicone bags are functional, compact, easy to clean (hello, top rack dishwasher!), and cute too.  They're available in so many colors, you won't even miss your sad little bag of plastic baggies.  The up-side to these bags is they're perfect for storing food, but they are also fridge, freezer, microwave, and oven safe... and you can sous vide in them too.  (not sure what that is?  find out here)
